Maryland improves to 2-0 for the third time in four years

With dual-threat quarterback C.J Brown and explosive receiver Stefon Diggs, Maryland knew they had the potential to be explosive on offense this season. That being said, no one could have predicted what transpired in the first two games.

With a 47-10 win over Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon, Maryland (2-0) has eclipsed 40 points in each of their first two games. Even more impressive, they have totaled over 500 yards in back-to-back games for the first time since the 1998 season.

Using a balanced scoring attack, Maryland put up 31 points in the opening half and took a 31-3 lead.

After adding two more touchdowns in the third quarter, the game was out of reach, allowing the back-ups to gain valuable experience on the field.

When asked if the game plan was to be run heavy or if it was dictated by game flow, Maryland Head Coach Randy Edsall said, “We knew we needed to run the ball better. We wanted to run the ball last week, but we weren’t as successful. But we feel like we have to be able to run the ball to be the kind of offense that we want to be.”

A big part of the running game came by way of sophomore running back Brandon Ross. He ran all over the Old Dominion defense, totaling 149 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. His performance definitely garnered the attention of his quarterback.

“Brandon had a great game today and I am happy for him,” said Brown. “ I see him do it in practice all the time so for him to get the touches that he did is great.”

Ross’ performance might have been the only thing that could have overshadowed Diggs. The breakout sophomore had six catches for 179 yards and a touchdown. Although he can be a one-man show, Diggs gave credit to the entire team on that day.

“We played better this week, and as a collective unit. We continue to try to get better each and every week and just keep coming together, build team comradery, and just come out on Saturdays and do our best.”

It’s the third time in four seasons that Maryland has started the season 2-0. The Terps’ first test will come next week against Connecticut. According the Edsall, Connecticut can wait.

“I’m not really worried about that right now. I’m sure I’ll be able to get a chance to talk about that plenty during the week. Wins are hard to come by, so I’m going enjoy this one.”
