Anybody who has participated in competitive, athletic sports saw or experienced a sports injury. It usually starts with a visit to the doctor, which then he or she gives a diagnosis that limits your playing and practice time.
I have experienced firsthand how an injury can limit your playing capabilities. Back in high school, I tore my cartilage twice and was unable to play competitive basketball anymore.
With that being said, here are some fun facts about sports injuries, particularly amongst young people.
1. More injuries occur during practice time than a game
According to Stop Sports Injuries Organization, 62% of all athletic injuries occur in the practice field rather than a game. It may seem like vice versa, but due to athletes not paying attention 100% of time, it causes the risk of injury to go up. Athletes are also are known to be more relaxed and goof off during a long practice rather than a high stakes game, which makes athletes no pay attention as much.
2. About 2.6 million young athletes are treated in the emergency department every year for sports-related injuries.
Many of these injuries include just a jammed finger or skinned knee to a more serious sports injury like a torn ACL and heat illnesses. It is very important for both parents and coaches to take note of early signs of injury amongst young athletes. If it is not treated early, it can get much worst. For example, a jammed finger which can be somewhat healed relatively quickly can turn into a broken bone within the finger which can be much worse.
3. According to the CDC, more than half of all sports injuries in children are preventable
This is a big deal considering the fact that, as the previous statistic stated, millions of kids end up in the emergency department due to sports-related injuries. However, there are many ways in which an athlete can prevent injury. One for example is to teach kids proper technique when making a tackle in football or playing defense in basketball. Having athletes practice proper form can prevent injuries in sports such as baseball, softball, football, basketball, tennis, and others. Another major preventive measure is to wear protective equipment, like hockey or football, correctly and safely. There has been many cases to which athletes will not wear the equipment properly which caused an injury to the player. So make sure you ask any questions to either coaches or players to see if worn properly
There are many facts and tips that you, your friends, or child can use to effectively stay safe on the practice field and in the game. If more people follow these tips, then we can have a more safe athletic competition
